The Roswell community and law enforcement agencies across New Mexico are mourning the sudden and tragic death of Officer Daniel Irvin, a dedicated member of the Roswell Police Department (RPD), who passed away on Wednesday night, May 13, at the age of 28.

Officer Irvin, who served in the RPD Patrol Division for nearly four and a half years, was found deceased at an apartment in the Spring River Luxury Apartment Homes located in the 1600 block of North Sycamore Avenue in Roswell. Authorities reported that the incident is believed to involve a self-inflicted wound. Emergency personnel responded to the scene at approximately 7:45 p.m. following a call for service.

The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office assisted Roswell Police in securing the area, while the New Mexico State Police have taken the lead in investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. In a show of coordinated support, both CCSO and NMSP helped manage emergency calls across the city throughout the night until 7 a.m. Thursday, ensuring continued public safety coverage during a difficult time for the department.

Officer Irvin was widely regarded within the department as a committed and hardworking law enforcement professional. In addition to his patrol duties, he served as a Field Training Officer, mentoring newly sworn officers and helping guide them through the early stages of their careers. His leadership role reflected the trust and respect he earned within the department.

Throughout his service, Officer Irvin received several commendations for his performance and dedication. Among his achievements, he was named the M.A.D.D. DUI Rookie of the Year in 2024. He also earned recognition for his role in apprehending an escapee from the Chaves County Detention Center and for his involvement in the Organized Retail Crime detail, highlighting his contributions to public safety and investigative efforts in the region.

The Roswell Police Department expressed deep sorrow over his passing and extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. The department also acknowledged the outpouring of support from the local community during this difficult period for what they described as their extended law enforcement family.

As investigations continue, authorities have not released further details, and officials emphasize respect for the privacy of those affected.
